Quality of Character
These sculptures have grown out of images of medieval images of green men, misericords, Hopi Kachinas and carvings in wood and stone from the 11th to 15th century.
The use of assemblage in the work represents the amalgamation of events, genetics, relationships and life that create who we are. Just as these figures are made out of this object or this piece of history, so we are a manifestation of moments in time, our loves and pains, this location, and the narrative we locate ourselves within. I'll admit that with a wry smile the art aims in part to create a portrait of the psycho-social identity of the 21st century.

Ministering Tributary (front view); Assemblage with flashe paint, 26"x26"x18; 1/14 Traveling in France, Austria, and Germany with students in the summer I have seen many reliquaries with bones, hands, heads, pieces of the cross, clothing of saints, parts of the cradle the Christ child was in, and the like. I find these containers of sacred materials fascinating. They historically for many were an embodiment of hope, mystery and faith. About nine years ago I did a watercolor of a disembodied head crying and a deer drinking from the stream he was creating with his tears. Hanging on the walls of my studio, that was the inspiration for this piece. Like a legend or myth, the head in the center through its tears and sorrow provides life and healing for the creatures around it. Heartache and hardship are a natural part of life that I feel can move one on to better and bigger things when given permission to be fully expressed. Goodness, truth, integrity and even life has a cost. $1,200

Redemption Cycle; mixed media assemblage, 32"x21"x5" 12/13 I couldn’t help but think of the books: Pilgrims Progress, Dante’s Inferno, Hind’s Feet for High Places, and the writings of George MacDonald (Phantasties & Lilith) while creating this assemblage. Life is a process and I found myself musing on the layers, the trials, tribulations and joys that are an integral part of our years of walking on this planet. Some layers you go through again and again, some travel through backwards it seems, others run through several times, some maybe stay at one level or place their whole life. It’s a process full of humor, grace, and absurdity. One figure sits on the left looking into the piece, the other almost identical to the first sits on the right looking out of the piece. He’s the same, but different than before. $900
